Best and Worst Blackjack Hands
What’s The Best Blackjack Starting Cards?
Everybody’s ideal hand in blackjack is 21 right away. After all, being dealt 21 on your first two cards automatically wins you the hand (provided the dealer doesn’t have blackjack) and nets you either a 3:2 or 6:5 payout. So if you bet $10 under 3:2 payout rules, you’d collect a £15 profit.
Unfortunately, we can’t rely on being dealt a natural blackjack too often. In a standard 6-deck game, you only have a 4.75% chance of being dealt a natural. That said, you’ll be dealing with a large variety of hands while trying to improve your score and beat the dealer. And here’s a look at the best and worst among the bunch.
Best Starting Hands
Two Aces – Why not start off with the chance to have two great hands in one round!? Split this one every time because you have an excellent opportunity to win both hands.
11 – The great thing about being dealt an 11 is that you’re just one 10-value card away from hitting 21. And even if you don’t get a 10-value card, 7, 8 or 9 still leave you in pretty good position. When your cards are 11, it’s recommended that you double down every time, except for when the dealer has an ace.
10 – This is another hand where you double down in most situations, save for when the dealer has a 10 or an ace. Speaking of the latter, if you’re lucky enough to get an ace, you will hit 21.
Worst Starting Hands
16 – The problem with 16 is that the dealer is supposed to hit until they at least reach 17. Of course, the dealer will bust out trying to do this sometimes, but more often they won’t. What’s worse is that when you hit to try and get a better score, you stand a good chance of busting out.
15 – This is yet another hand that puts you in a poor position to win because your score isn’t very high, yet you might bust out by hitting. For this reason, it’s definitely a good idea to grab a blackjack strategy chart and make the correct moves so you avoid being put in these situations.
